TUCSS President Mr Ow Chun Nam signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with IES and ACES on 6 October for the Accreditation of Resident Engineers (RE) and Resident Technical Officers (RTO) in the field of Tunnelling works. TUCSS will, through its expertise in tunnelling works, support IES and ACES toward the Accreditation of RE and RTO in the specialised field of tunnelling works. The main objective of the Accreditation scheme for RE and RTO specialising in tunnelling works is to equip and enhance the construction industry with the special skill, care and attention required during the construction of tunnelling works with respect to quality, workmanship, safety and occupational health. The other objectives are to promote learning, training and continued education of the individuals and recognition for their skill and expertise in this specialised field. The RE and RTO with accreditation in the specialised field of tunnelling will be referred to as RE(Tunnel) and RTO(Tunnel).

TUCSS will conduct evaluation, assessment or interview of applicants as necessary and make recommendation to IES/ACES registry secretary on acceptance or rejection of the application. TUCSS will in addition organise training courses, seminars, workshops, and conferences related to tunnelling to meet the training and professional development needs as well as for the yearly renewal of the accreditation registration. TUCSS will be responsible for publicising, conducting and allocating training hours related to these courses.

The Secretary of IES, Mr Chong Kee Sen and President of ACES, Mr Lim Peng Hong who were also signatories to the MOU said that they were delighted to participate in this accreditation scheme.

With the accreditation in mind TUCSS will conduct a 2 day Training Course on Tunnel Construction during 22-23 October 2008. This course will give a comprehensive background to tunnel construction. and is aimed at REs(Tunnel) and RTOs(Tunnel)."
